Bluff Reef - West Coast

Bluff Reef

Bluff Reef is a very consistent right-hander reef break just south of Bluff Beach. This is for experienced people only. The hold downs can take a little getting use to - just don’t panic - you will be fine. The power of the wave is substantial. The photo above is of Quentin Bye on a medium day. Bluff reef can become almost double mast on the bigger days. It is one of the best forming waves in the Marrawah area.

Works best on a NNE - NE for down the line starboard tack. Can be ridden on the shoulder in a SW but if you misjudge the peak - you will probably destroy some equipment. The wave is generally a perfect breaking 60-80 metre ride.

The west Coast of Tasmania is predominantly a SW direction wind. The best bet to sail Bluff Reef is on a NE between January to March. NE directions make up about 30% of afternoon sea breezes at that time of year.
